Roll Cage/Suspension/Steering Report

DUE: 2004.09.01

Historically, one of the most consistently under designed and under considered components on solar cars has been the roll cage. A team cannot pass Scrutineering with a roll cage that fails to meets the requirements of Reg. 6.5. Once at Scrutineering, it can be very difficult or impossible for a team to rework its roll cage.

In an effort to foresee and forestall possible problems at Scrutinering, ASC Headquarters is requiring teams to submit a roll cage/suspension/steering report (RCSS report). The purpose of the report is to let teams know early on if officials see an obvious shape problem with a roll cage, suspension attachment points, or steering. It is not a complete analysis of the systems. Nor does it remove responsibility from the team for building a safe vehicle.

Teams competing in ASC2005 need to submit an RCSS report to HQ by September 1, 2004 (Reg 3.5.1.). Additional roll cage information can be found in Reg 6.5.

Please note that the roll cage is not just the roll bar. The roll cage encompasses the entire driver (Reg 6.5.3).

If the vehicle is a two person vehicle, the roll cage information also needs to be included for the passenger.

The report needs to include:

Drawings

  • Scaled drawings showing at least three views of the roll cage (top, side, front). Include an isometric view if possible.
  • Include a driver in at least some of the views.
  • Suspension attachment points need to be indicated in the sketches.
  • While we strongly encourage you to submit an RCSS report prior to construction, you can send in photos if you have already built the roll cage.

    Text
  • A page or less of text with information about roll cage material, construction, and dimensions.
  • A brief description of the suspension configuration, materials, and construction (1-2 paragraphs).
  • A brief description of the steering system (1-2 paragraphs).

We cannot review an infinite number of plans, but you may submit more than one design.

If possible, please submit the sketch electronically (PDF, Word file, JPEG, website). If you must submit it by postal mail, please send three copies. Submit sketches to:
