North American Solar Challenge 2005
Volunteer Information

The mission of the American Solar Challenge (ASC) is to promote and celebrate educational excellence in science and engineering. ASC also promotes renewable energy technologies and the creative integration of technical and scientific expertise across a range of disciplines.

Community support for past solar car rayces has always played an important part in the success of the event. For interested community members, one of the most exciting ways to participate in the event is to assist rayce officials with local activities.

For the 2005 North American Solar Challenge, volunteers will be needed at the various Checkpoints on the route to assist teams and observers coming into the checkpoints. Assistance with directing traffic and providing information to the public is also welcome. Volunteers are especially needed at the Stage locations and the Finish Line.

We also need some volunteers that are interested in assisting during the entire event. Because of the nature of the route, all volunteers that are helping for the entire Rayce should be prepared for the possibility of camping during the event. Additionally, volunteers traveling the entire route will have to be able to enter Canada and need to have a valid passport.

One type of volunteer that travels the route is an Observer. Observers travel with teams to record the teams' progress along the route. Additional information is available about being an Observer.

All necessary training, uniform T-shirts, and refreshments are provided to volunteers. Rayce days begin early and often end late. Please be aware that it is not unusual for staff to have 12 to 15 hour days.

If you would like to be added to the list of potential volunteers, please complete the form below and we will contact you with more information. If you have specific questions, please contact ASC Headquarters (Email: volunteers@americansolarchallenge.org, Phone: 800-606-8881).
