Official Interpretation

4/10/2004 Regulation 5.8.3, 5.8.5
Question:
Can the protection system which controls the relay also be powered from that same battery? Under the Supplemental Batteries rule, a team can use a separate battery to power its main disconnect relay. In powering both systems off of one battery, supplemental battery failure causes the protection system to shut off and the relay to open, which is a fail-safe consistent with operation of the system mentioned in the rules.
Official Response:
No, the protection system must be powered from the main pack. This also allows you to get some information from the batteries even when they are shutoff. The relay itself may be driven from either the main pack or the auxilary batteries, though the auxillary will probably be needed to start it.
