Formula Sun Grand Prix
Engineering Meets Efficiency on the Track
The Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP) is a multi-day, track competition where collegiate teams design, build, and race solar-powered vehicles on the track competing to complete the most laps. This challenge tests not only engineering and energy efficiency but also strategy, teamwork, and endurance.
How It Works
The Formula Sun Grand Prix is more than just a competition—it’s a test of engineering, strategy, and endurance. Here’s what it takes to compete.
3 Days on the Track
Teams spend 24 total hours on the track (three 8-hour days) trying to complete the most laps. FSGP has been held at many tracks which offer differing challenges in elevation, corners, and chicanes.
Vehicle Classes
Teams compete in Single-Occupant Vehicles (SOV) to complete the most laps or Multi-Occupant Vehicles (MOV) for a balance of laps and efficiency.
Strategy & Innovation
Teams must optimize solar energy collection, battery storage, aerodynamics, and train their drivers to maximize efficiency, extend range, and boost overall performance.
