Engineering Meets Endurance in a Cross-Country Solar Event
The American Solar Challenge (ASC) is a multi-day, cross-country competition where collegiate teams design, build, and drive solar-powered vehicles across thousands of miles. This challenge tests not only engineering and energy efficiency but also strategy, teamwork, and endurance.
How It Works
The American Solar Challenge is more than just a competition—it’s a test of engineering, strategy, and endurance. Here’s what it takes to compete.
Distance & Route
Teams navigate a ~1,500-mile base route with optional loops, facing varied terrain and real-world driving conditions as they stop at key checkpoints.
Vehicle Classes
Teams compete in Single-Occupant Vehicles (SOV) for pure efficiency or Multi-Occupant Vehicles (MOV) for a balance of performance and practicality.
Strategy & Innovation
Teams must optimize solar energy collection, battery storage, and aerodynamics to improve efficiency, extend range, and boost overall performance.
